Mankind is still the most extraordinary computer of all" (John F. Kennedy) On my previous blog entries, I have mentioned about different Web 2.0 tools that can enhance our teaching and engage our students into their own learning process. These tools can bring creativity into our teaching. Here are my suggestions: With Glogster, you can create digital posters. It's a very creative way to communicate with the world. You can add photos, videos, audio files, text and animated characters. Students can create film posters, advertisements. They can use it as an introduction to their own e-portfolios.You can embed it to any website. Here is my glogster: www.ozgekaraoglu.wikispaces.com. I've been using it as an introduction to my portfolio. Also, here is the wiki that I've created for my kindergarten students using glogster: www.magicenglish.wikispaces.com Wix is similar to glogster. You can create flash web content with animated backgrounds, adding text, pictures, audio files, videos. You can also import pictures from Flickr and videos from Youtube. Box helps you to keep your PowerPoint presentations or word documents online and share it with others. We can keep our written assignments and put the link on our social network. Students won't lose their homework. Even they lose; they can always find it on the site ready for them to be printed by using box.net. Voki is such a fun site to play with. It enables users to express themselves on the web in their own voice using a talking character. You choose your character among lots of choices. You can change the hair, eye, clothing, accessories, background and even the make-up of your speaking avatar. You give it a voice and embed it to your site. Students can describe themselves; they can answer questions, sing a song, read a poem and talk about anything you assign them. Talkingpets is the site that's got all the pets talking. You select your pet. You type the text you want your pet to say. You save it and send it as an e-mail to anyone. You can even upload a photo of your own pet. We can send assignments to our students using this link. Students can wish Happy Birthday to each other. Here is my tip for you: If you want your pet to talk slower, just put comas between the words. Ning is a social networking site that we can collaborate with our students or colleagues. We can share videos, photos, slideshows. We can keep a blog and a forum on the site. I had mentioned about two easy podcasting tools; Chinswing and Vocaroo. Here is another one for you. Vozme is in a way different than others. You type your text, choose your voice (male or female) and you can save it as an audio on your computer or anywhere else. We can ask questions to our students, they can talk about themselves. It is both in English and Spanish. Writeboards are sharable text documents that let us save and edit changes on a document online. We can write solo or collaborate with our students. It can be a very efficient tool to write stories with our students collaboratively. I' sure we are all familiar with Wikipedia. Here is my suggestion for lower level of students. Simple wikipedia. Everything is in simpler English. Here is a very interesting technology. This must be Web 3.0. This technology can think and answer your questions. I'm really amazed at its answers and the questions it has asked to me. Just try it yourself and with your students. You will enjoy a lot. Here it is. Also, here are some other bots I've come across on web. Santabot, Alice, Zabaware. Mankind is the most extraordinary computer of all; or is it? You tell me. More you will find on my next blog entry. All the best, Özge (I highly recommend that each of us carefully preview any sites before sharing it with our students.)
